Virtual Education Sessions Overview
A core goal of our community engagement work is to provide information to community members about the complex set of considerations that will inform what is possible on site. To help build a foundation of collective knowledge around these topics, the planning team will produce a series of online Virtual Education Session videos, each focused on a different element or elements of the planning process. These Virtual Education Sessions will be developed over multiple phases of the project and will be uploaded to this project engagement website.

Virtual Education Session 4: Site Design Layers
Virtual Education Session #4 explores a series of Site Design Layers that serve to inform future site design explorations. Site design layers take a focused look at each of the major systems and use categories that come together to compose a plan for the future of the site. The planning team has explored different approaches to each of these layers to understand potential benefits, impacts, and trade-offs of each potential direction. These considerations, community input to date, community input on these layers, the project Guiding Principles, and direction from the Santa Monica City Council will serve as the foundation for the three test fit scenarios later in Phase 3A.
This video provides basic project information for those who are joining the project for the first time. If you have kept up to date with project phases and engagement, feel free to skip ahead to minute 11:15, where the video starts discussing new content.

Virtual Education Session 2: Understanding Scale & Airport Conversion 101
Virtual Education Session #2 builds on the project framing and site orientation of VES 1 to begin breaking down the scale of the 192-acre site and teasing out the issues uniquely involved in the work of converting an airport into other community-serving uses, focused on a great park. This video will compare the size of the Santa Monica Airport site to other places community members will be familiar with to help understand the potential of the site. This video will also explore common opportunities and challenges associated with the ambitious work of converting an airport and innovative funding strategies for both implementation of the community’s vision and long term operations and maintenance.

Virtual Education Session 3: Site Opportunities & Sustainability
Virtual Education Session #3 explores the Santa Monica Airport site and context in more depth, highlighting constraints and opportunities to potential future conversion. Opportunities are discussed through the overarching objective of achieving a sustainable conversion to new public-serving uses. Sustainability is explored through the lenses of environmental, energy, and water resilience, economic self-sufficiency, and social equity. Sustainability strategies are explained and a review of select case studies helps to describe the opportunity to leverage similar strategies on the Santa Monica Airport site.

Preparing for Takeoff Open House - 05/19/2024
On Sunday, May 19th, the project planning team (including representatives from the City of Santa Monica, Sasaki, and The Robert Group) hosted a kick-off event for the Santa Monica Airport Conversion Project. Community members were invited to meet the planning team, explore exhibits related to the project process and the airport site, and participate in activities to better understand the site and provide initial input on our planning work. You can explore the exhibits displayed at the event below. Click on the Open Detail View button below each image to further explore the content on each exhibit.

Join the Events
Each major phase of community engagement will include a community event in Santa Monica, offering community members the chance to engage directly with the planning team and the content explored as part of that phase of work. These events also give our team a chance to meet and hear directly from community members about what is important to them. These events will take place in accessible locations throughout Santa Monica.
Community Events
The second large-scale community event as part of the planning process will be held on Saturday, December 7 at Memorial Park Gym from 1pm-4pm. This Phase 2 Community event will review the results of Survey 2 around the future of the airport site after its anticipated closure at the end of 2028.
