Virtual Education Sessions Overview

Virtual Education Sessions Overview

A core goal of our community engagement work is to provide information to community members about the complex set of considerations that will inform what is possible on site. To help build a foundation of collective knowledge around these topics, the planning team will produce a series of online Virtual Education Session videos, each focused on a different element or elements of the planning process. These Virtual Education Sessions will be developed over multiple phases of the project and will be uploaded to this project engagement website.

Virtual Education Session 2: Understanding Scale & Airport Conversion 101

Virtual Education Session #2 builds on the project framing and site orientation of VES 1 to begin breaking down the scale of the 192-acre site and teasing out the issues uniquely involved in the work of converting an airport into other community-serving uses, focused on a great park. This video will compare the size of the Santa Monica Airport site to other places community members will be familiar with to help understand the potential of the site. This video will also explore common opportunities and challenges associated with the ambitious work of converting an airport and innovative funding strategies for both implementation of the community’s vision and long term operations and maintenance.

Each major phase of community engagement will include a community event in Santa Monica, offering community members the chance to engage directly with the planning team and the content explored as part of that phase of work. These events also give our team a chance to meet and hear directly from community members about what is important to them. These events will take place in accessible locations throughout Santa Monica.

Community Events

The first large-scale community event as part of the planning process will be held on Sunday, May 19 at Clover Park, near BBQ Area #1, from 11am to 3pm. This first event, Preparing for Takeoff, will feature exhibits explaining the planning process and gaining feedback from participants, the site, and components that will be important to planning for the future of the airport site after its anticipated closure at the end of 2028.

Pop up Events

Join the Santa Monica Airport Conversion Project planning team at pop-up planning events throughout each phase of engagement. These events are planned to be alongside existing community events to offer convenient opportunities to engage with the planning process and best meet community members throughout Santa Monica.
